Description
Amelia Earhart Rare ALS To Her Mother. From "Earhart DNA Package"
ALS, 1p, measuring 5" x 8", May 25, 1933, Rye, NY, written in the hand of Amelia Earhart to her Mother. The letter comes from "Earhart DNA Package AEL003", which was used to create a DNA profile for the missing Aviation icon. The letter + envelope is listed as a 95% DNA likelihood of a match to Earhart. Creased along old folds, toned along edges and folds, minor scattered soiling.
The note reads in full:
"Dear Mother.
Here's a little dough. The house is getting finished but - the last few weeks are tedious.
Will write more later.
A"
This short note paints a time in Earhart's life when she was constantly on the move, traveling with her husband, G.P. Putnam, headlining lectures, and hosting and attending a variety of events. This letter is unique among those between Amelia and her mother in that it may have some of the last available DNA directly from Amelia Earhart. In fact, the envelope (NOT INCLUDED) in which this letter was sent, was used to form a DNA profile for Earhart to compare to DNA fragments found near where she likely disappeared. A photocopy of the envelope is included along with a copy of the "Earhart DNA Package Delivery and Inventory" list provided to Simon Fraser University.
The example present in this lot was numbered "AEL003" of the "Earhart DNA Package" by Dongya Yang, a forensic archeologist at Simon Fraser University. A copy of the photo of Yang holding the envelope which was sent along with this letter is featured in the photos above.

Amelia Earhart (1897-1938) was one of the world's most celebrated aviators and was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean (1932). In addition to her piloting feats, Earhart was known for encouraging women to reject constrictive social norms and to pursue various opportunities, especially in the field of aviation. Her aviation career was cut short though when she tragically disappeared in 1937 while attempting an unprecedented aerial circumnavigation of the globe.
Provenance: From the estate of record-breaking aviator, Amelia Earhart author and researcher Elgen M. Long and his wife, fellow Earhart scholar, Marie K. Long.
