Description

Journals of Congress November 1st to November 6th, 1779

"Journals of Congress, from Monday, November 1st, to Saturday, November 6th, 1779." Philadelphia: David C. Claypoole, Printer to the Honorable the Congress, ca. November 1779. 7pp, measuring 4.25" x 7.5".   Lightly toned and foxed throughout. Overall, very fine.

The Proceedings from November 1-6, 1779 include a Resolution to exchange Lt. Col. J. Connolly for a U.S. Army prisoner of the same rank in captivity of the enemy; Letters from Governor Livingston, Philip Schuyler, General Washington, General Gates, John Adams, and the Marquis de Lafayette, among others; and Nominations for several positions within Congress, including Treasurer, assistant adjutant general, chambers of accounts, commissioner of the board of treasury, and auditors of the army. It appears that the printing was likely removed from a larger volume.

In September 1776, Congress tasked Robert Aitken to reprint two congressional journals that had already been published and to continue to print future journals. When Aitken was indisposed, his duties were frequently fulfilled by John Dunlap and David Claypoole, both well known to Congress. These Journals contain the most vital documents from the Revolutionary period through the proposal of the federal constitution, including the text of the Declaration of Independence (with the names of the Signers), minutes of the debates at the Constitutional Convention, and the proposed text of that document. Such publications would be an excellent addition to any early American enthusiast's collection.
