Tulp (Nicolaes) Observationes medicae..., second edition, engraved pictorial title and 19 illustrations, all but one full-page, occasional foxing and offsetting, contemporary mottled calf, rubbed, rebacked, [Willems 1155], 8vo, Amsterdam, L.Elzevier, 1652.
⁂ The preferred edition of this interesting work that contains the first descriptions of beri-beri and of what is probably diphtheria. Tulp was professor of anatomy at Amsterdam, known for Tulp's valve (the ileocecal valve) and for his appearance in Rembrandt's painting The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp of 1632. The illustrations include one of Tulp's valve and another of an "orang-utang", actually a chimpanzee.
