Police.- Lincoln City Police. Robbery Book, 966pp., printed columns with manuscript insertions, in black and red ink, some margins browned, original reverse calf, extensively rubbed, corners and edges worn, folio, Lincoln, 1858-1881.

⁂ Police ledger of robbery records in Lincoln at the height of the Victorian era, containing instances of larceny and other miscellaneous crimes. The entries include records of the dates of the incidents, value of goods stolen, crime category, description of the crime, names of the investigating officers, result of the enquiry and a record of the sentence meted out. Each year is signed off by the Chief Constable, most notably William Mansell who retained the job for 32 years. Crimes included: larceny, obtaining by false pretences, perjury, breaking and entering, receiving stolen goods, stealing farm animals, counterfeiting coins, forgery, robbing and stabbing. Punishments included imprisonment, hard labour and corporal punishment (birching etc.).
