Mary, Queen of Scots.- B[uchanan] (G[eorge]) Ane detectioun of the duinges of Marie Quene of Scottes, touchand the murder of hir husband, and hir conspiracie, adulterie, and pretensed mariage with the Erle Bothwell, first edition in Scots dialect, black and italic letter, text in Scots dialect and French, woodcut decorative initial, lacking A1 (title), R1-4 (provided in facsimile), Y2 (provided in facsimile), Y3 (often so), and Y4 (blank), sig. F misbound between S3 and S4, occasional spotting or staining, lightly browned, 18th century mottled calf, sympathetically rebacked, gilt spine in compartments and with pinkish morocco label, [Pforzheimer 113; STC 3981], 8vo, [Printed by John Day], [1571]. sold not subject to return.
⁂ Rare at auction. Buchanan's infamous treatise on the murder of Mary's husband, Henry, Lord Darnley, and on her marriage to The Earl of Bothwell. It includes the fraudulent 'Casket Letters', which eventually led to the trial and execution of Mary at Fotheringhay in February, 1586. The translation into Scots dialect is possibly by Thomas Wilson.
