Vincent Novello (1781-1861), English musician, son of an Italian who married an English woman, was born in London. He was a chorister and organist, but he is best known for bringing to England many works now considered major standards, and with his son he created a major publishing house.

Joseph Alfred Novello (1810-1896) was an English music publisher. He was the eldest son of Vincent Novello, and the creator of Novello and Company Ltd as a revolutionary force in music publishing. He had started as a bass singer, became a regular music publisher in 1829. Latter he built the Novello business, and is credited with introducing cheap music and of departing from the method of publishing by subscription.

After his retirement from the music publishing business in 1866, Alfred Novello moved to Genoa and pursued his interests in the Italian Irrigation Company, playing and composing organ music, and the study of hydrodynamics. He obtained several patents on ship construction and worked with William Froude. He died in Genoa.

Many of Novello published compositions were sacred music, much of which was very popular. His great contribution, however, together with Christian Ignatius Latrobe, lay in the introduction to England of unknown compositions by the great masters, such as the Masses of Haydn and Mozart, the works of Palestrina, the treasures of the Fitzwilliam Museum, and innumerable, now well known great compositions.
