Description
17th Century Dutch Old Master Drawing, Double Sided, Seated Mother with Small Child, Pencil on Blue Treated Paper, Sketch of Village with Figures on Verso, Ink and Pencil, Measures 9 1/4 x 8 Inches. Bears 18th Century Collector’s Mark of Earl of Dalhousie (L. 717a) Earl of DALHOUSIE, Scotland. Old drawings. This mark appeared on the interesting drawings preserved in two albums, from the 18th century, containing one of the drawings of Rembrandt and his school (especially of Nicolaes Maes), the other of the Italian drawings of the 16th and 17th centuries. These two albums were acquired by P. and D. Colnaghi & Co., London, in 1922. Soon after, the first album was in the hands of Cassirer, Berlin, who sold the sheets separately, and the another passed almost entirely into the F. Lugt collection. Several of the drawings bore on the back, handwritten, the initials J.G. (see L.1460d). The current Earl of Dalhousie has no information about any collector of his ancestors who may have had the mark reproduced, let alone the initials. Remains of the collection, without much interest, passed anonymously in a sale at Sotheby's in London on February 23, 1955.
