The canvas has been stiffly lined. There are a few scattered spots of surface dirt. There is fine craquelure across the work which is most pronounced in the lower-left quadrant - this all appears to be stable. When viewed in raking light the texture of the canvas becomes visible. Just below the front of the badger there is a horizontal crack in the paint measuring approximately 16cm, and there is another shorter crack just below this - both appear stable.
Inspection under UV light clearly reveals a small number of spots of retouching, notably just around the rabbit's face, a few small spots on badger, and some small spots to the foreground. There is what appears to be further old retouching in other areas, however this does not read clearly.
