2 Needlework Samplers of Girls in Big Skirts

Item Details

Description

A really fun pair of needlework samplers (needlework pictures, technically, I think) of girls in large balloon skirts. The needleworks are virtually identical in design and color, and they are from together in a contemporary figural maple frame. Both are signed with initials (“E M” on the top one, “E D” on the bottom one), and they date c. 1825. The top one is 8 1.2” x 8” and the bottom one, slightly larger, at 9” x 8”. Overall, the sight size is 17 ¼” x 9 ½” (overall frame size is 21” x 13”). Both figures are surrounded by a floral border. The top sampler includes 2 bowls with flowers and miscellaneous other items (flower, tree, etc) and the lower sampler includes 2 angels and flowers, plants, etc. Condition on the samplers is very good or better. The colors (red and green, primarily) have held up nicely. There are no rips, tears or holes on either piece. The top one shows some light soiling along the bottom edge (most noticeably in the lower right corner) and some scatter minor stitch loss. The lower piece has some small areas of missing stitches (under the angle on the right and in the skirt and in the girl’s neck and lower part of her face), and a small area of straining under the angel on the right. The frame is contemporary, stamped “Ed Gilsom, ??? New Hampshire”, and very heavy. Lots of charm here!!
