Description
Cardboard with wall paper covering. Round with red and white block printed floral designs. Lined with Woodstock, Vermont, 1841 newspaper. 5.25"h. 10.5"d. And an oval box with litho printed paper, lined with Scranton, Pennsylvania, 1858 newspaper and Victorian prints. Inside the lid is an albumen photo of a woman "From Mother". The top of the lid has a gouache painting "Residence of St. Paul Academy for Girls...Made by Eliza Fairman her 2nd year 1858". Wear. 12.25"h. 14.25"l.
Condition
Smaller round box has overall edge wear and a couple of splits in the lid edge. The base has several small areas of insect loss, toning (original lighter color shows at the top edge) and a stain along the bottom.
The oval box with painting has a series of creases around the top edge of the base and the lid edge where the sides have been pushed in but no splits. The painting on the lid has been cut down and added over the wallpaper and has tears through the center (house) and some edge loss. One area of edge loss on the right side has been colored in.
