Description

Salem area, mid 19th century, retaining vibrant orange red combed grain painted surface with geometric designs, five dovetailed drawers, poplar and yellow pine secondary, on turned feet, cut nail and dovetailed construction, unsigned, 44 x 46 x 17 in.

Note: This chest is among the best and most vibrantly painted examples of Karsten Peterson's work.

Provenance: Collection of Tony and Marie Shank, Marion, South Carolina (accompanied by snapshots of the chest in the Shank home); Levison & Cullen Gallery, Atlanta, 1996 (accompanied by write up and copy of receipt for $7500, purchased late 1990s; Private Collection
