A 15 1/8 inch decoy by A. Elmer Crowell (1862-1952), East Harwich, MA. The maker's oval brand signature and "Made by Elmer Crowell 1915" is written in his handwriting on the bottom. The decoy exhibits the maker's finest body detail with rasping on the breast. Crowell added carved secondary feather wing tips to compliment slightly raised primary feathers and fluted tail feather carving. The head is a replacement possibly done by Cleon or Elmer Crowell.Displays excellent original paint on the body with patina, there is a tight age crack along the back from breast to tail, an age line around the base of the head, and under the tail there is some craquelure and a few spots of paint loss due to an old sap bleed.
