HERBERT MERRILL WILDER (1864-1915) was a cartoonist for a few magazines and newspapers including Life, Puck, and Harper’s Weekly. Wilder’s work is highly sought after and as he was a perfectionist, he is a listed artist but you rarely see works of this size and magnitude and even fewer examples from Puck magazine. This illustration is captioned “The Man Who Has ‘Arrived’: Ye Gods! And I’ve Struggled All My Life For This.” A woman with the word “FAME” shinning above her head wraps her arms around a man, with laurel leaf crown and ribbon wrapped document in hand, sit atop a pedestal. There are a few tiny pinholes in the center and some mild smudges on the page. Signed lower left, Wilder with Charles L. Howard Label bottom center matt. Title label dated 1910 on reverse.

The state of preservation of these original illustration drawings that are on average over 65 years old is quite exceptional. Very, very few have any creases, tears or losses to the paper and the ink has remained uniformly vivid thanks to the family’s dry flat storage. Given that these were working drawings from which prints were made the expected edge annotations, highlighting, inscriptions, pasted labels, tack holes, staples, glue residues and scattered corrections can be found variously on the examples as illustrated in the photographs. These all add to the authenticity and immediacy of the Wartime newsroom and pressroom atmosphere, serving to reinforce the iconic status of these rare surviving testimonies to the political illustrator’s art.
