Description
Lima Builders Plate from Birch Valley Lumber Company number 5, construction number 3189. This plate has a very unique and colorful history through the locomotive's life in the hills of West Virginia. Although the locomotive was built for the Birch Valley Lumber Company, it was inspected and ICC-certified under the name of Strouds Creek and Muddlety Railroad. It was involved in a fatal accident in 1941 killing its crew. The original builders plates (including this one) are documented having been removed from the locomotive sometime in the 1950s, this is likely why all of the bolt holes are ripped out of the plate. The locomotive itself survives today as Cass Scenic Railway Shay Number 4 in Cass, WV. Despite the evident damage, this is a very unique plate with a colorful and well-documented history. Back of plate shows old deteriorated black paint with scale and corrosion, with epoxy repair at bottom hole location. Plate has "54-169" stamped into left-top side of face. Condition: (4). Dimensions: 11 - 1/2" x 6 - 1/2".
