17th c. Middle Eastern Bronze Pot with inlaid gold wire decoration and six cartouches of court portraits, inscription around neck reads 'He designated the noble attack in the days of the Caliphate of Sultan al-Akhtan', reign of Suleiman I, 6 1/2" tall, 8" diam, very heavy walls. Good condition with expected wear to surface, loss to gold wire. From the collection of Joseph Clark Grew, (1880-1965), American diplomat, b. Boston. Entering diplomatic service in 1904, he held posts of increasing importance in different capitals until 1924, when he became Under Secretary of State.
