An antique French Art Nouveau period solid gilt bronze box and cover with panther / jaguar? theme signed G. Gardet for Georges Gardet*. Stamped " Siot, Paris and numbered "708D" on the underside. Beautifully made and designed.
Approximate measurements: 7" H x 5.25" in diameter.
Georges Gardet (1863-1939) was born in Paris in1863 and died in 1939. He is considered one of the greatest of the later period of the French school of Animalier sculptors. The son of sculptor Joseph Gardet, he was a pupil at the Ecole des Beaux Arts under Aime`and Emanuel Fremiet. Gardet first exhibited at the Salon des Artistes in 1883. His first major success at the Paris Salon was in 1887, with the group Panther and Python, where he subsequently exhibited on a regular basis. He was awarded the Knight of the Legion of Honour, and won the Grand Prix at the Exhibition Universale in 1900. He was a member of the Society of French Artists and the Academy of Fine Arts.Gardet worked in marble, onyx and bronze. The signature "G. GARDET" was hand printed in capital letters on his sculptures.

Condition
Good overall condition, some discolorations to the gilding, slight surface scuffs and very minor dents
