A set of twelve silver George III soup plates, A set of twelve silver George III soup plates, by Thomas Chawner, London 1788, each with a gadrooned rim and later engraved with coat of arms of Stephens quartering Lyne, each 24.5cm diameter, 227ozt (12) The arms are those of Stephens quartering Lyne, exemplified in 1826 to Charles Lyne (1764-1851) of Devonshire Place, London, and Weymouth, Dorset, on his assuming by royal licence the surname of Stephens. He inherited a fortune from a cousin, John James Stephens (d.1826), himself the inheritor and proprietor of a successful glass factory at Marinha Grande, Portugal. After Mr Lyne-Stephens' death, his vast fortune passed to his son's widow, the French ballerina, Pauline Duvernay (1812-1894).
