Description
Japanese Silk Miyamairi Ceremonial Kimono, Mid 20th C. Kimono with applied gold paint used in the Miyamairi ceremony, a traditional Shinto rite of passage in Japan for newborns. Approximately one month after birth, parents and grandparents bring the child to a Shinto shrine, to express gratitude to the deities for the birth of a baby and have a shrine priest pray for his or her health and happiness. Size: 3'5'' x 3'2'' (104 x 97 cm). Provenance: Sylvia and Philip Chaplain Collection, New Hampshire.
