Description
A very impressive, antique Japanese red lacquer, Bugaku dance theater mask made for a Kitoku actor. Bugaku is a Japanese imperial court dance accompanied by Gagaku music. Bugaku theatrical dance has been performed to Japanese elites inside Japanese imperial courts for over twelve hundred years. It is a slow moving, traditional, Japanese dance, blending Buddhist and Shinto elements.
Bugaku theater productions predate Noh theater productions. The masks used in the Bugaku theater are generally much larger, as is the case with this large and impressive example.
The orange silk head straps hold an authentic Ming dynasty coin on the back. It is very rare to find a coin attached to the back of a Japanese actor’s mask. It was probably used by the actor as a good luck piece. The coin has the mark of the Yongle Emperor of China. The years of minting were 1408-1424. These coins were widely distributed in Japan during the early trading years.
These types of theater masks were passed down from father to son. The label inside the mask reads National Treasure.
Size: Approx. 11 in. H x 7 in. W.
