Description
Continental School, "Portrait of a Gentleman in a Yellow Robe," 19th c., oil on canvas, unsigned, unframed oval canvas, H.- 25 3/4 in., W.- 20 3/8 in. Provenance: From the Estate of artist Louis St. Lewis, Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
Condition
Condition is consistent with age. There are various areas of in-painting throughout canvas, in particular on garment, face and sides of canvas (see reference photos). There is a layer of varnish as well, except for one area on bottom right side where it looks like there is no or very little varnish. The original canvas has been cut down and relined. The relining has been waxed on back and sides. This is a very handsome example.
