Anglo-Indian Sankheda polychrome and parcel-gilded sofa, likely Gujarat, with a joined ladderback three-seat backrest, the neckrest supported by spindles and hung with wooden pendants, with two similarly constructed armrests surrounding a rectangular drop in seat (now lacking), above four turned legs, the sofa allover polychromed in deep green, bronze, and red, with allover bronzing and parcel gilt painting in the ancient egyptian or etruscan taste (fading to exterior-facing pigment). 34" H x 53" W x 25" D x 14" seat height Note: This unusual suite is in a style which was well- known in the US between 1870-1890 when Moorish, Indian, Turkish, and near-Eastern ornamentation were popular in men's studies and smoking rooms. The offered lot and the other pieces in this suite resemble in form several painted pieces by Lockwood de Forest provided for his own home on 10th Street in New York City. The furnishings of Lockwood de Forest were ordered and made in Ahmedabad, in Gujarat state, from where these pieces come.
