Description
Probably John Wood Jr. (1736-1793) Philadelphia Tall Case Clock, c. 1785, walnut case with broken arched bonnet with three brass finials and carved floral and inlay decoration and vasiform columns, the waist has fluted corner columns centering a tombstone shaped door above the base with quarter columns, line and shield inlay with ogee bracket feet. The composite dial with silvered, arched nameplate engraved "John Wood Philadelphia" has silvered seconds, date and chapter rings and moving moon dial marked "Osborne's… mounted by an intermediate plate marked "Osborne" to the movement. The Brass 8-day movement has arched cutout plates, the strike mechanism modified to strike a coiled gong mounted to the case backboard, includes weights, pulleys, pendulum, winding and case keys, condition as follows, the original holes for the strike hammer, spring and bell stand are present in the plates, the original bell and stand are not present, moving moon dial has some touchup, the main cast dial is finely finished, riser blocks appear original to case with many holes, one block broken but present, case refinished, 105" h. x 18" w. x 10" d.
