Description
A stunning, carved tribal drum that represents the meeting of two giants. Gifted to B.B. King by Nelson Mandela, this drum features a woman embracing a child at its base, and a ring of men’s heads propping up the pulled fabric of the drum.
In a 1960s interview, B.B. King stated that one of the people he’d be most honored to meet in his lifetime was Nelson Mandela. This admiration went both ways, given Mandela’s legendary love of music. King was amongst Mandela’s favorite musicians, and even appeared in the 2013 documentary “Music for Mandela.” The film depicted how the South African activist and president saw music as an impactful tool for change and reconciliation, as well as the inspiration he served to many musical artists’ work. The two’s paths finally crossed when B.B. King played a concert in Cape Town, South Africa. During their meeting Nelson Mandela gave The King of the Blues this incredible drum as a symbol of the men’s new friendship and respect for each other.
This artifact has been in the hands of King’s family since his death, and this is its first time it can be viewed by the public. Please Note: Several cracks and chips in the sculpted base of the drum, some may be original to the design.
