Description
Unusual earthenware flask, likely Italian or Middle Eastern (Islamic), ca. 14th to 16th century. The glaze is likely lead based, and has three colors: brown, green, and off-white, marking it as influenced by sancai (egg and spinach) wares of Tang Dynasty China (7th to 10th centuries). The off white makes the background, while the green and brown are used to paint vegetal motifs. This vase is bottle form, with two handles meeting at a small mouth. Glaze does not reach all the way to foot of vessel. This vase has considerable wear and damage, especially at one handle. Some writing on bottom that seems to have been added later, and may indicate this piece is from Italy. 7 3/4" tall by 4 1/2" wide. Keywords: fancy, art, pottery, ceramic, vase, house, home, decor, decoration
