ABOUT THE ART

BOSTON —

The New England Aquarium's Simons Theatre now has a mural that was painted by a world-renowned public artist Shepard Fairey.

The new mural by Fairey is part of the Sea Walls: Artists for Oceans global program to spread awareness of ocean conservation. Fairey's mural features a North Atlantic right whale and a globe with the phrases "Protect the blue planet," "a vital & vibrant ocean for all" and "one ocean -- one people."

The Sea Walls: Artists for Oceans public art program, which was founded by the PangeaSeed Foundation, will bring a total of 14 ocean advocacy murals to Boston, along with public programs, film screenings and other events through Monday.

The mural at the Simons Theatre is one of a series of seven new public murals in East Boston that will join the seven murals that were created last year as part of the Sea Walls Boston pilot project.

The New England Aquarium is serving as this year's honorary conservation partner and hosted Fairey and his team of artists as they painted the mural on the theatre. In the days leading up to the work, Fairey and his team met with scientists from the aquarium's Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life to learn more about environmental issues facing the Gulf of Maine along Boston's coastline and other conservation issues of concern.
