Condition
Smart, adaptable and decorative as a pair of 'smaller-than-usual' commodes.
Each probably originally having some kind of upper section or superstructure, but probably later separated or adapted for use as commodes.
The marble tops are associated but both appear to have very good age, it is highly likely these are 18th century.
The marbles seem fixed in place, or just extremely difficult to remove.
Some fairly significant repaired splits and further repairs to one marble top but evidently a completely different type of marble has been used for this purpose.
Loss to a rear corner of one marble, with a couple of further minor edge losses.
Some chips to the edges of both marbles commensurate with age.
Shrinkage as well as signs of old worm to the backboards.
Some hairline shrinkage and a few minor repairs to surfaces consistent with age.
The ormolu handles and brass escutcheons are later replacements.
4 keys but one key is missing its flag which has clearly broken off.
The feet on both commodes have been tipped or extended in height by the addition of small blocks approx. 4cm high.
Some knocks to the front of one upper brass edge mount.
Further nicks and scuffs to the horizontal brass mounts commensurate with age.
In good decorative and ready to use order.
