Item Details
Description
A pair of 19th century French gilt bronze and white marble cassolettes
in the Louis XVI style
the ovoid bodies with domed covers with fruiting knopped finials reversing to fluted cylindrical candle nozzles, the swept tripod supports with scrolling horned Bacchus mask terminals, united by floral garlands and milled central collars on cloven hoof feet, raised on stepped circular plinth bases with beaded borders and toupie feet, 27cm high overall (2)
Condition
In good decorative condition commensurate with age and use.
The surface to the bronze components has almost certainly been cleaned and regilded at some stage but now has some very minor dulling and a with a few areas for tarnishing in a few places -particularly to the edges of the covers where they drop into the bodies where they reverse to the candle nozzles.
The candle nozzle sides to the covers are much brighter - presumably because the cassolettes were always more recently displayed with the domed covers showing upward as the candle nozzles were not greatly used. However the interiors of the nozzles have some greenish spots and streaks.
There is some minor wear to the extremities of the bronze - to the edges - particularly there is a tiny scratched or bruised area to the edge of the circular base near to one of the hoof feet to one cassolette. Also the pins holding the beaded borders in place has darkened.
The marble is generally in good order with some typical very slight and minor yellowing and there is a darkened hairline crack running through the top of one of the domed covers - this is not major and does not detract from the attractiveness of the pieces and presumably it could be bleached out.
There is some orange corrosion and discolouration to the nuts and bolts to the undersides of the bases.
