Description
A good mid 19th century mahogany bracket timepiece together with an associated wall bracket
the dial and movement signed Arnold & Charles Frodsham, 84 Strand, London and numbered 850
the case of drum head form on ionic plinth base with signed and numbered 7.5' silvered Roman dial and fine skeletonised heart-shaped hands, the brass single chain fusee movement with engraved backplate, anchor escapement and four uniquely shaped pillars, with brass pendulum, winder and two case keys, the clock, 43cms high, the bracket, 27cm high (2)
Footnotes:
Although Arnold is engraved on the dial of the offered lot, it is a product of the Frodsham workshop as John Roger Arnold died in 1843, and it was after his death that Charles Frodsham purchased Arnold's corner premises at 84 Strand, which Arnold had used since 1821. Frodsham continued to use the name 'Arnold', sometimes even using 'J. R. Arnold', together with his own name on all the items produced by the shop. By 1858, Frodsham stopped using Arnold's name on his product dating it to circa 1844-1858. The address of 84 Strand, originally a coffee house when constructed in 1696, would remain part of the Frodsham company until it was pulled down in 1894, as part of development for Hotel Cecil.
