Description
white oak sides and handles with yellow pine bottom, cylindrical form with tapered straight-edge nailed lap joint, two applied carved handles, nailed bottom, boldly stamped "J. LEINBACK" below rim. Retains an outstanding original dry surface. Third quarter 19th century. 8 1/8" H, 14 1/4" D.
Provenance: From the Eddie Tatum estate collection, Winston-Salem, NC.
Catalog Note: The owner's stamp seen on the present measure is most likely for James T. Lineback (1828-1912) of Salem, NC. At the age of 20 he took up teaching at the Salem Boy's School. Later in his career he worked in the Salem Land Office and held different positions in the Salem Moravian Church. Lineback is buried in the Salem Moravian God's Acre Cemetery.
