Modeled in clay, incised with cuneiform, purportedly the clay nail of Gudea, Guvernor of Lagash, c. 2120 BCE. 6"L. Provenance: Purchased from Renee Kovacs in 2000. Condition: repaired crack to underside of head of nail.Note: Clay nails, or foundation cones were used by Sumerians. The clay forms were engraved, baked, and inserted into mud brick walls, and served as dedications for buildings.
