September 27, 1858-Dated, Poster "The Celebration in San Francisco, in Commemoration of the Successful Laying of the Atlantic Telegraph Cable", Published by Sterett & Butler, Very Fine.
A historically important Printed Poster that measures about 16.75" x 11", being printed in black on light blue period paper. This rare decorated Poster is fully titled: "The Celebration in San Francisco, in Commemoration of the Successful Laying of the Atlantic Telegraph Cable, Monday, September 27th, 1858."
Ornate Woodblock Engravings and Letterpress Typeset is handsomely presented on blue paper. This large single sheet has a border design comprised of 35 individual small illustrations: Four Stars located in each of the corners, thirty small State Seals, and a Portrait of President George Washington at the top center. Text on both sides of this amazing celebratory sheet provide text describing the celebrations. Larger illustrations within the body of the sheet include an image of Horse-drawn carriages carrying 120 little girls dressed in white, representing all the States, and the principal European Nations; "Rube Aldrich, just arrived, 120 Days from St. Jo., Missouri"; "Adams, with his family of Native Californians"; and the men of the Knickerbocker 5 Fire Company in procession behind a float of a small boat with cable coiled on its deck. Verso has two purple rubber stamps of "Kimball's California Glue" and "Water White Coal Oil / 20 a Gallon at Kimball's, 534 Valencia Street." Some light tone, a few minor edge nicks, otherwise a nice example for display. An extremely rare paper survivor ... not destroyed in the great San Francisco earthquake and fire. Reference: Baird & Magee 23.
