Reverse Painting on Glass "EUROPE - ASIA" by D. Gerolimo Representing Peace Between Britain & America
c. 1800, Colorful Historical Reverse Painting on Glass titled, "EUROPE - ASIA", Painted by D. Gerolimo, Very Fine.
This impressive decorative painting measures about 13.5" x 9.25" (by sight), framed to 17" x 12.75". Colorful image shows Geographic Allegorical Figures of "Europe" and "Asia". The European figure is in the garb of Athena, holding a staff with a globe to one side and a cornucopia on the other. The figure of Asia is far humbler and is only slightly a Native American Indian Princess in appearance; she holds a small smoking urn likely with tobacco, with a camel depicted to her left. A large Sailing Ship is seen on the ocean water between the two figures. A classic representation, this image leaves little doubt as to the dominant (more cultured) continent. Very solid and complete with just two small flaking areas in the dirt on either side of center. Appears to be housed in its original period frame, with expected wear, yet ready to hang on display.
