c. 1790 Federal Period, Original Naval "Press Gang" Tool or (modern name Billy club), Used, British, with Sailor's Macrame, Choice Very Fine.
c. 1790 possibly earlier, authentic high-quality larger size Naval "Press Gang" Tool or (modern term Billy club), measures about 12" long. Authentic period Sailor's Macram fully covers the surface of both of the weighted heads, the larger one measures about 2" in diameter. The handle between the heads is made of long solid twisted deep richly colored natural wicker that has cracked due to use and age being reinforced from cracking heads with hand-sewn tread. Impressment refers to the act of taking men into a military or naval forces by compulsion, with or without any prior notice. Various Navies from several nations used forced recruitment by various means. Naval "Press Gang" tools as this were also used for keeping sailors in line, waking them up and for Press Gang recruitment work on land, useful as well during a boarding attack. This high quality rare design specimen is well worthy of any museum or quality period Naval display.
