Description
Apache Beaded Hide Strike-a-Light Bag
fourth quarter 19th century

thread and sinew-sewn thick hide; having glass beads in colors of rose, white, greasy yellow, dark blue, and translucent green; fringe with tin cones

overall diameter 6 inches

Apache strike-a-light pouches seem to come in two silhouettes - rectangular, as the two above, and circular.   This latter shape, also is seen among the Comanches as a representation of a peyote button.   Perhaps there is a connection between the Apache and Southern Plains tribes relating to the procurement of peyote buttons from the Mexican deserts.   There is also a curious parallel between the medium to dark colors of the beads preferred by the Apache and those used by the Kiowas and Comanches (Hanson 1994: 208).
