Item Details
Description
East Asia, China, Han Dynasty, ca. 206 BCE to 220 CE. A fine flock of mold-formed pottery rams within a bowl-shaped enclosure. This miniature model of a sheep pen was used as a votive offering for the deceased to accompany them into the afterlife. The pen is a simple basin with a flat base and everted rim, and evenly spaced piercings through the walls. The recumbent sheep are settled casually inside, resting in wait with their legs tucked to their sides, but heads raised and alert: curved horns to the side and raised eyes. The surfaces except for the flat underside of the basin, are glazed in a jade green hue. Size: 9.375" Diameter x 3" H (23.8 cm x 7.6 cm)

This piece is part of a class of artifacts called mingqi - sometimes known as "spirit utensils" or "vessels for ghosts." They became popular in the Han Dynasty and would persist for several centuries. Mingqi included attendants, musicians, athletes, animals, structures etc. Even though they were mass produced, mingqi of the Han Dynasty often show a high level of detail and naturalism. These were designed to assist the po, the part of the soul of the deceased that remained underground with the body while the hun, the other part of the soul, ascended. Scholars believe that caring for the po took on a new level of meaning in the Han period, with more elaborate rituals and tomb construction arising.
