James Abbot McNeill Whistler (American, 1834-1903) original etching and drypoint on laid paper c. 1879 entitled "Hurlingham", showing skiffs and rowboats moored along the River Thames, the buildings of a village in the background. It is signed in the print with the artist's butterfly mark, lower left. The original label affixed to the back (after reframing) is for Frederick Keppel and Co., Rare Engravings and Etchings, No. 4 East 39th Street, New York. The art dealer, who operated at this address from 1905 to the 1920s, was a major dealer in etchings, establishing friendships with many of the artists whose work he sold, including Whistler, whose art he began to purchase in the 1880s. In ink on the Keppel label: "Hurlingham, Original etching by James A. McNeill Whistler. Proof signed in the plate with the butterfly." Frame, approx. 15 1/4" x 13 1/4". Image, approx. 8" x 5 1/2".
