Inuit, Port Harrison/Inukjuak, (b. 1941), a carved stone sculpture, 'Legend of the Woman Who Nursed the Caterpillar,' signed and inscribed in syllabics on the underside.

Footnotes:
Charlie Inukpuk is the son of Johnny Inukpuk (1911-2007), a camp leader and one of the most well-known Inuit artists of the 1950s. Inukpuk began carving as a teenager, learning from his father and other carvers in Inukjuak. The present lot is an unusually large example by the artist, and shows his distinctive preference for figures with large hands and a composition heavy with complex, modulated surfaces.

Purchased at Alaska on Madison, Gallery of Eskimo Art, New York, NY, November 7th, 2001; a copy of the invoice accompanies the lot

Condition
Good condition overall with a few scattered scratches, scuffs, fleabites and abrasions commensurate with age and material. More scuffs around the edges near the base.
