18th C. engraving by John Peltro (1760-1808) after a painting by Robert Dodd (1748-1815) depicting the naval battle between Commodore John Paul Jones, USN in USS Bonhomme Richard and Capt. Richard Pearson, RN in HMS Serapis, 23 September 1779. Caption reads: "To the Merchants trading to Russia, this print representing the gallant defense of Capt. Pearson in his Majesty's ship, Serapis, and the Countess of Scarborough Arm'd Ship Capt. Piercy, against Paul Jones's Squadron, whereby a valuable fleet from the Baltic were prevented from falling into the hands of the Enemy, is with greatest respect Inscribed by their humble servant, John Harris" and showing "English Force" and "Enemy's Force" with numbers of men and guns. Also: "Robt. Dodd, Pinxit" at lower left and "J. Peltro, Fecit." lower right. Bottom edge trimmed, with some loss of text and truncated Imperial double headed eagle. Approx. 13 1/8" x 18 1/8". Provenance: a private Northern Virginia collection.
