FOLDING BAGATELLE GAME TABLE.
FOLDING BAGATELLE GAME TABLE.
Item Details
Description
1830, UK: The game-top to this table was built by Joseph Sanetti of Manchester, UK., while the base was imported from the Netherlands. This bagatelle table is the forerunner to the contemporary pinball games of the 20th century. Delving into history, we can find a reference to a Bagatelle device as an amusement in chapter 14 of Charles Dickens' 1836 "The Pickwick Papers", where members of the Pickwick Club had fun at a bagatelle game in the Peacock Tavern. This example is mounted to a base where, when opened, it will slide to the center giving equal overhang on both sides. Clearly marked for the maker, Joseph Sanetti, with some original markers, all the original balls, but unfortunately, no instruction on how the game was played. CONSIDERATIONS: Remarkable given the age of the game, the walnut base was refinished at some time and has a great patina. The bagatelle game is also walnut and has very little wear, all of the ivory inset game markers are intact, and the table folds up into a great side table. This is not a standard shippable item and will require 3rd party shipping or pickup arrangements to be made. Condition: (Very Good). Dimensions: 43 - 3/16" x 27" x 34".
