Eastman Johnson (American 1824-1906), "Old Man Reading", oil on board depicting a gentleman with white hair reading a book on a table in a darkened interior, initial signed "E.J." lower left, with two paper labels en verso, possibly in Johnson's hand, framed. Note: This piece is listed in the Eastman Johnson Catalogue Raisonne, Hills number 26.7.7. Alternate titles for this work are "Man Reading a Book" and "Portrait of a Man". A study for this piece is held in the collections of the the National Academy of Design, New York, NY, Hills number 26.7.6r, with a date of circa 1875-1871.
