Tonala pottery is a world-famous style, known as a true 'mestizo' art form. Originating with the Tonalteca people of central Mexico, pre-Hispanic Tonala ceramics were known for their highly polished and burnished forms depicting forms seen in nature. With the arrival of Europeans, the people of Tonala began to blend traditional burnishing techniques with lacquer brought over by Augustine missionaries. Tonala ceramics became a household staple for wealthy families, and was regarded as a luxury product from the Americas.
