Created in 1880, the Alamo Roman and Portland Cement Company was the first manufacturer of Portland cement West of the Mississippi river. After some initial resistance in the local market, the plant began to expand. In 1897, the company was reincorporated into the San Antonio Portland Cement Company and began a new advanced firing process. The plant would go on to supply Portland cement to the surrounding areas and gaining prominence as one of the largest producers of cement in the Southwest. The cement produced at their plant was used in multiple prominent building projects around the state, including the construction of the Texas capitol. Today, the initial plant location, while not in use, is an important example in the history of kiln technology.
