Gallery Framed and Matted Hand Colored Photograph :"Santorini, Greece" 1999 by Karen Vournakis. Purchased at her gallery located at 125 King Street, Charleston. In frame 15"x15"x1 1/2". Weight 3 pds. Karen Vournakis works in the 19th Century tradition of hand-tinted photography. She first explores the world using black & white film, then adds color by hand painting her original gelatin silver photographs. By layering transparent oil, colored pencils and special crayon pigments directly onto the photograph, she takes hand tinting to another level in subtlety and form. PROVENANCE: 25 East Battery, Charleston SC. The Charles H. Drayton House, built between 1883-1886. Cited by architectural historians as one of the finest examples of Eastlake Victorian architecture in South Carolina.
