Item Details
Description
A rare and fascinating collector's item for fans of film and vintage literature - an early 1921 edition of The Crock of Gold by Irish author James Stephens and the inside title page is signed Orson Welles. On the last page of the book is an expressive felt tip drawing of a bearded man in a suit and hat. Initialed on the bottom right OW. This could be a self portrait of the famed American director, actor, screenwriter, and producer. Welles is most remembered for his innovative creating the radio show War of the Worlds, as well as cinematic productions like Citizen Kane. Welles studied art at the Art Institute of Chicago at the age of 16 and continued to draw and paint throughout his life until his passing in 1985. This item has been curated from a smoker's estate. Dimensions: 7.5h x 5.25w 1h (framed). In very good condition consistent with age.
Provenance: This item was curated from the estate of Kenneth Robert Stanley (1957-2022) who was a Detroit musician, world traveler, and collector. Per Rick Manore, co-founder of CPOP Gallery, "Ken was a postal worker for over 30 years, Ken's career afforded him the ability to buy and collect art. His apartment was like a small museum of both famous and up-and-coming artists' work. Ken especially collected Detroit artists, many of whom would become household names. Works by Glenn Barr and Niagara would share walls with Mark Ryden and Roy Lichtenstein. His collection of pristine vinyl records and Rock ephemera was eclectic and focused. Ken's book collection was also tuned to his Post-Postmodern taste. This auction is about more than just great art - it is a testimonial to the love and passion for art and music by Kenneth Robert Stanley."
