Description
A somber and contemplative etching titled March of the Weaves by Kathe Kollwitz. The original image was created in 1897 and is the fourth plate of six in a series Kollwitz called Ein Weberaufstand (The Rise of the Weavers). This series proved to be one of the most important works of her early career, as its public display in Berlin in 1898 catapulted her to national recognition. From a private collection. Dimensions: 15.25h x 20.25w (framed). In very good vintage condition.
Kathe Kollwitz (1867-1945) was a German artist who worked with painting, printmaking, and sculpture. Her most famous art cycles, including The Weavers and The Peasant War, depict the effects of poverty, hunger and war on the working class. Kollwitz was the first woman not only to be elected to the Prussian Academy of Arts but also to receive honorary professor status. Four museums, in Berlin, Cologne, and Moritzburg, and the Kathe Kollwitz Museum in Koekelare are dedicated solely to her work. The Kathe Kollwitz Prize, established in 1960, is named after her.
