Description
12th-13th century A.D. A Baltic socketted javelin head with barbs and tapering round-section shank for insertion into a wooden shaft. See for a similar specimen Nicolle, D., 'Raiders of the Ice War' in Military Illustrated, March 1996, no.94, pp.26-29, fig.p.28 and Toroptsev, A., Kievan Rus, Moscow, 2001 (In Russian), pp.120-121, fig.2. 200 grams, 24 cm (9 1/2 in.). Acquired in the 1990s. Private collection, London, UK. Property of a Sussex, UK, teacher. Lithuanian and Baltic infantry mostly fought with spears and axes, but barbed javelins are also present in their graves. Spears and javelins were often purchased from arm traders, though equipment was also captured in battle. [No Reserve]
