Description
2nd-3rd century A.D. A penannular bronze bracelet with terminals shaped as snake heads. See Crummy, N., Colchester Archaeological Report 2, the Roman small finds from excavations in Colchester, 1971-1979, Colchester, 1995, no.1693, for similar bracelet head terminal. 7 grams, 59 mm wide (2 1/4 in.). Found Ancaster, Lincolnshire, UK, in 1886. Acquired 1980s-1990s. Collection of M. Cummings, Lincolnshire, UK. Accompanied by an old dealer's ticket. Roman armillae are common and varied: some of them were penannular-shaped, often with terminals shaped like serpent’s head. The snake was often associated with Aesculapius (Greek Asklepios), god of health and medicine, and had a positive connotation. [No Reserve]
