Item Details
Description
Circa 3rd century A.D. A flat-section bronze leaf with tapering, round-section petiole with bulbous terminal, the body with stylised detailing outlining the midrib and diagonal veins. Cf. Crerar, B., ‘Votive Leaves from Roman Britain’ in Henig, M. (ed.), Roman Art, Religion and Society. New Studies from the Roman Art Seminar, Oxford, 2005, pp.71-89, fig.3. 33 grams, 16.5 cm (6 1/2 in.). Found Lincolnshire, UK. Acquired 1980s-1990s. Collection of M. Cummings, Lincolnshire, UK. Accompanied by copy of correspondence discussing the piece between various archaeologists and the British Museum, dated 2013. The item belongs to a particular category of votive plaques, cut out of a thin sheet of metal, further defined by a repoussé pattern-work in the shape of a leaf or a feather. They were widespread in the Roman Empire, including Britain, often also displaying an image of a deity or an inscription dedicating the plaque to a certain divinity. [No Reserve]
