Description
Limited-release Pink Gooseberry Cinderella Mixing Bowl Set by Pyrex (1957-1966). Includes #441 (3/4 qt.), #442 (1-1/2 qts.), #443 (2-1/2 qts.), and #444 4 qts.). Per the Corning Museum of Glass, Gooseberry was introduced along with Butterprint in 1957 for the new opalware line. These two were among the first to debut the "Cinderella" bowl series of nesting mixing bowls with handles or spouts. In 1957, Corning's Pyrex kitchenware designers devised a set of four nesting mixing bowls. The mixing bowls differed from the original nesting set by the addition of diametrically-opposed flares in the rims which gracefully taper from the sides of the bowl, serving as a convenient grippable handle and a pour spout. Their designer was John Phillip Johnson. The naming of these new pieces as "Cinderella" likely had much to do with the popularity of the Cinderella story current at the time both in film and on Broadway. Corning marketers also hoped the underlying theme of a coveted glass object would have a subliminal effect on consumers. Largest measures 13" across at widest point and smallest one measures 7 1/2"
Condition
Two larger bowls are in excellent condition. 442 has surface wear and losses and 441 has fading and losses to design. No chips or cracks. Overall a lovely set.
