Item Details
Description
Victorian 12kt Rose Gold Cherub Ring or Slide, 1800's. This has a mounted cherub cabochon that is in a tan to drag green shade - is it gutta percha? Not sure. The cherub is bezel-set in a dotted rose gold frame that tests as 12kt. It is rose gold. It is 22mm down the finger and 19mm across the finger. The cherub cabochon was cracker and glued. It is stable in the setting. Here is where the question comes in - is it a ring or a slide for a scarf. The band that goes around the back of the finger is very oval and has to be the way the ring is made. It would fit on a slim finger, size 2 but it is not rounded like a ring back woudl be. It is a stamped design with a split shank where it meets the top of the ring and is appx. 6mm wide and tapers to 2.5mm at the back of the finger. It is not marked or signed but does test as 12kt and is rose gold. Weight of the ring with the cabochon is 5.16 gr. Youc annot really see the stone was glued without looking from the undercarraige and it is stable in the setting. If you look toward the armpit of the little angel you can see the crack but not really easy to see unless someone is looking very closely. The stone does not wobble in the setting. I've never encountered the odd oval band and I've been doing this many decades. The design is such that you could not round out the band though a jewelry could cut the band and add to it to round it out but given the width of the setting, it would ahve to be a large size ring. Very interesting and very Victorian looking. (W52122.2X6 SS7454 J LD 6/2/22).
